Course-to-course articulation does not mean that a course will also receive General Education Certification. GE Certification is campus specific, meaning that the student will receive GE certification in the area for which the course was certified on the campus where he/she took the course. (For example, Anthropology 001 at Foothill Community College articulates with Anthropology 012 at San Jose State University. However, Anth 001 meets Area D at Foothill and Anth 12 meets Area B2 at SJSU. If the student takes Foothill's Anth 001 he/she gets Area D credit and if he/she takes SJSU's Anth 12, he/she gets Area B2 credit.).
In order to complete the baccalaureate requirements for San José State University all students must complete, in addition to the major requirements, the lower division California State University General Education Breadth Requirements as specified in Executive Order 595 issued by the Office of the Chancellor, California State University System, January 1, 1993.
General Education Breadth agreements consist of those courses that a student can complete at a community college to satisfy General Education-Breadth requirements at San José State University.
Some of these requirements are to be completed after transfer but most (39 semester or 60-62 Quarter units) are to be completed during the freshman and sophomore years. The templates presented below are formatted to the specifications of Executive Order 595 and are subject to change so it is important that students visit their counselors/advisors and secure a copy of the general education requirements for your particular campus.
The California State University General Education Breadth Requirements presented below are for advisement only as the specific campus is responsible for recommending and certifying all courses for that institution.
